Review and swatches: Faith Hope Love Argan Tint and Blush

Faith Hope Love Skin Food is heaven sent for those who love locally produced, organic, and cruelty-free products. Last year, I reviewed their Argan Glow lip and cheek balm, and this year, the brand owner kindly sent me a few more products to try out, including the new Argan Tint and Blush.

This comes in gold and clear lipgloss tubes with doe foot applicators. I find these easier to use and tote around than the lip and cheek balm. The Argan Tint and Blush comes in 8 colors with either a Juicy or Soft Matte finish. All of them are fully pigmented but almost weightless, and leave a mild cooling sensation on the lips when applied. Those who like tints or liquid lipsticks but hate a heavy feel or overly made-up look will appreciate these.
Faith Hope Love Argan Tint and Blush
Shades: Without You, After All, Linger

Without You (Healthy Matte) is a mauvey nude that looks good with either a no-makeup look or to lightly complement a smokey eye. A unique shade that is different and more subdued than the usual brighter pinks or reds that lip tints come in. This only lasts about 3 hours on me and does not leave much of a stain behind.

After All (Juicy) is a pretty cherry red and my favorite of the three. Even if it's called Juicy, it dries down shine-free. Pigmented so one coat is enough, but you can layer on for more intensity. This wears the longest on me of the three and works well worn alone or if you want to layer lipstick or gloss on top.

Linger (Healthy Matte) is a gorgeous brownish cranberry color that would look most natural on darker skintones, or bolder on paler skin. I love the shade, but the formula is unfortunately very frustrating. I do not have particularly dry lips, but these clung to every line and made my lips flake. I tried layering this under creamy lipsticks and it still didn't work out for me. The applicator also picks up too much of this particular formula and is easy to get messy on the lips. It comes off like crazy on my coffee cup. However! The owner has informed me that Linger has been reformulated, so I may purchase another tube to check because I do like the color.

These are priced at P280 for 9ml each and available on Beauty Manila (although frequently sold out there). Find out more about Faith Hope Love and order directly from their website, fhlskinfood.com .

Review and how to use KokoClear teeth whitening powder

5:19 PM Joanna C. 0 Comments

A lot of friends and readers found my old entry on Crest Whitening Strips helpful, but some found it difficult to find the strips in Cebu, found it uncomfortable for sensitive teeth, or found P2,500 for a box too expensive for teeth whitening.

Good thing we now have a cheaper, locally made alternative for brighter, whiter teeth - KokoClear teeth whitening powder.

It might look daunting at first glance, but this black powder is completely odorless and completely tasteless. It's 100% natural and made in the Philippines.

There are two ways I use this product:
1. Brush teeth as usual, then rinse.
2. Dip damp toothbrush head in the powder then rub all over teeth.
3. Let it sit while I take a shower, then brush off and rinse thoroughly.

Or -
1. Dampen toothbrush head, put toothpaste on it, then dip in the powder.
2. Brush teeth for at least 3 minutes.
3. Brush off and rinse thoroughly.

After the first use, my teeth felt really polished and clean. Usually, my gums near my left canine bleed after brushing my teeth, no matter how careful I am. After one use, this bleeding stopped completely.

After a week, my teeth started looking noticeably brighter. It has been about a year since I last used a box of Crest Whitestrips. Here's a photo after less than a month of using KokoClear every night:
A "no edit, no filter" photo of my friends Ivy, Rae Anne, and myself

KokoClear is priced between P450-P600, depending if it's on sale. Considering you only use a toothbrush-head-sized amount each time, one tub will definitely last you a long time! Order from kokoclearph@gmail.com and find more details at kokoclearph.com.

Review: Althea Korea Petal Velvet Powder

8:56 PM Joanna C. 0 Comments

Congratulations are in order to online K-beauty shopping haven, Althea Korea, for its first-ever in-house product. Similar to how Sephora is a cosmetics boutique that has its own brand of makeup and tools, Althea Korea has been busy with product development to come up with the Petal Velvet Powder.

According to its product information, the Petal Velvet Powder is designed for / with:
     1. Makeup setting and long wearing
     2. Micro-fine particles and soft, smooth texture
     3. Natural and cruelty-free ingredients
     4. Sebum control and pore blurring

The powder comes in a simple shaker-type tub with 3 grams of product, and a pillowy soft puff. It's small and light enough to take in your bag.

I've been using this loose powder since it was released last month to see how I really feel about it. I'm surprised how Althea can offer this for only P210 considering how silky and fine the powder is. It's translucent so it has no color, and no white cast. It disappears immediately into the skin with a few dabs and makes skin look smooth, yet not flat. It has a floral scent that is not at all obtrusive to me, but makes it that much more enjoyable to apply with the super soft puff.

The only part that didn't quite work for me is the sebum control. I get oily very quickly on my T-zone, so with this, I have to touch up after just a couple of hours. But if you have less oily skin, you may not have this issue.

Overall, I find it to be a beautiful and natural finishing powder that behaves more expensively than how it's priced.

Read more about the Petal Velvet Powder ingredients and purchase it here. Althea Korea still ships door to door for a minimum purchase of only P999 for the Philippines - always an important factor to me because I can't be bothered to pick up parcels at the post office!

Product empties: Lush Cosmetics, Ole Henriksen, Sooper Beaute, etc.

2:08 PM Joanna C. 0 Comments

I've got an overflowing basket of products I've emptied out since my last empties post in April, so I need to get this blog post up so that I can finally throw these away!

My sense of accomplishment in 20-something empty products.

Hair and body care empties

Palmolive Naturals Intensive Moisture shampoo and conditioner. Love this affordable, available-everywhere hair care product for making hair softer. I've been using it on and off for years. This has fetched compliments from someone behind me in the office elevator that my hair still smelled good at 6 p.m.

Suave Professionals Almond and Shea Butter shampoo. It's supposed to be a moisturizing shampoo for dry, damaged hair, but my hair doesn't feel much softer or smoother with this. But I do prefer using this for a deeper clean than the Palmolive one gives me for when my scalp feels particularly oily.

Lush Cosmetics Helping Hands hand cream. Good for those who don't like heavy hand creams. It does still feel a little greasy to me, so I only wear this before going to bed. I use it on both my hands and feet.

Lush Cosmetics Glogg body wash. This is a limited edition release that I honestly forgot about in my backup stash, but amazingly, it still retained its sudsiness over the years. Nothing super special about this except for the addicting mulled wine scent.

Myra hand and body lotion. I think most Pinays have used this at some point. It's an affordable, lightweight lotion that's good for our tropical weather. If you have particularly dry skin, though, this might be too light to be effective for you.

Belo Essentials clinical strength anti-perspirant and deodorant. Works as it says it does, but I don't really feel it being much more effective than Belo Essentials' other roll-on deodorants to have the "clinical strength" label on it.

Sooper Beaute Complexion Refining Kojic Acid lotion. Really nice for making skin smoother. After a few weeks of daily use, my skin got that nice sheen that smooth skin shows off. Sooper Beaute products are natural and Philippine-made. They're always affordably priced, but they have sales pretty often if you want to save even more.

Curious by Britney Spears perfume. This also took me a long time to use up because the scent started getting boring for me, but apparently, it's one of the best-selling celebrity perfumes of all time. It's girly but not too sweet or cloying. The bottle is pretty, though I don't leave out my perfume bottles on display to protect them from dust and sunlight.

Bath and Body Works Wild Citrus Sunflower body lotion. I've been constantly using Bath and Body Works lotions for more than a decade. The fragrance lasts a long time but isn't too strong as to interfere with whatever perfume you layer on top.

Facial and nail care

Bobbie nail polish remover. Another staple in many Pinays' manicure sets since it's affordable and available everywhere. It does still leave white marks on my nails, but it's nothing that a proper wash and lotion won't cure.

Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First serum. Such a good nighttime product to remove the last of the dirt on your face, and refines and softens the skin. Highly recommend! I will repurchase, but much later in the future because I still have a bunch of other products waiting to be tested in my stash.

T.N. Dickinson's witch hazel. Several of my friends and I swear by this as a facial toner or to soothe blotchy skin. Those who've bought it upon my recommendation have also said that they love it. Available at Healthy Options.

Neutrogena Deep Clean long-last shine control facial scrub. A good facial cleanser that can remove dirt and makeup and won't dry skin out. I only used this at night before bed, though, so can't really vouch for the shine-control part since I only get oily when I'm out and about.

Ole Henriksen Vitamin Plus mattifying creme. This is probably the most disappointing product I've encountered in a while. It's not a bad product - it worked fine as a facial cream. But for $50+, I was expecting a lot more, based on the Sephora reviews that this is best for combination skin. The only thing it has going for it is that it's lightweight, but I saw no dramatic effect on my skin. I'd say save your money for something else.

Sooper Beaute pore minimizing serum. An affordable one to try for blurring pores. Absorbed immediately by skin and you won't feel it after application if you hate any sort of weight on your face from facial products. For me, also helps with oil control on my T-zone.

Urban Decay eyeshadow primer potion in Sin. I find that Urban Decay eyeshadow primers work best with Urban Decay eyeshadows, but not that great with other brands. Sin is a shimmery primer that amps up the, well, shimmer in your shadows, but it's actually also pretty on its own.

Maybelline Define-a-Brow pencil in Medium Brown. These brow pencils have already been phased out - who knows why, when these are the bomb. Perfect for creating on-point brows if you want that clean and sharp line. The tip is fine enough to lightly draw on strands if you like the gradient brow effect that feathers out at the front. The annoying thing with this is that the tip breaks off so easily, so you have to make sure that you only twist up just enough...If you can still find these online, anyway.

Etude House Drawing Eyebrow. Needs no introduction among Pinays; just about everyone I know uses this pencil. Can't count anymore how many of these I've used up.

K-Palette 1-Day Magic liquid eyeliner. Super long-wearing, smudge proof, and with a tip that's not too skinny that doing your eyeliner will take half your day. The liner stays jet black, unlike other liners whose applicators absorb product and start fading over time.

L'Oreal Miss Manga mascara. So gorgeous for a long, fluttery lash effect. Not particularly thickening so you may not be a fan if you want bold, really voluminous lashes, but very pretty for a soft, eye-opening look.

Any thoughts on these products or have something to recommend? Let me know! I always love hearing about new things or products that have always been around that I've yet to discover.

Hair makeover: warm to cool at Piandre Salon Cebu

I was quite fickle about my hair last year. I went from my usual golden brown shoulder length to a blonde bob, then a burgundy lob. It was burgundy for all of two weeks, but apparently, red tones don't stick well on dark hair, so it kept washing out. Not satisfied, I tried a more purple shade that came from a box, which alas, also kept coming off on my towel after every shampoo.

After giving my hair a rest for a few months (you should color only once every three to four months to avoid more damage), my strands were several different colors - my natural brown-black, a faded light brown, and some areas that were threatening to turn orange. I wanted my hair to look healthy again!

Piandré Salon at Oakridge Business Park immediately came to mind. They did a great job before with a deep conditioning hair treatment that left me with coveted "rich girl hair," so I wanted to see what they could do for my color.

After quite a bit of discussion with the colorist, Rheymonn (hope I got that right!), who listened to exactly what I wanted and gave his suggestions without imposing on me, we decided on a chestnut brown base with ash highlights. This would darken my color overall and give it a cooler tone to counter the orange hue that dark hair tends to get when it's fried from the summer sun. I've wanted to try ash brown for ages since my hair has always been on the warmer side, but dark hair has to be bleached first for ash to translate well. With the ash highlights I didn't have to bleach my whole head, while giving the dark chestnut base more dimension. Rheymonn did a literally very fine job with the highlights as he bleached the tiniest, finest sections before applying the ash blonde.

Piandré uses all Lakmé hair products from Barcelona to prevent damage while coloring and improve hair health, from the pre-color scalp protector to the dye itself. Lakmé products for every possible hair condition and conundrum are available at the salon. I picked up a few to help maintain my new hair color and softness and they work wonders, especially when hair is blow dried.

Even with two people working on me, the whole coloring procedure took five hours with several rounds of wash - rinse - dry for base, bleach, highlights, then toner to finish. Thank God that aside from its extremely clean, comfortable interiors, the salon is well stocked with up-to-date magazines and plenty of water and tea. The competent, knowledgeable staff made the whole experience a mini vacation from reality. You know you're in good hands when those hands aren't scrubbing your scalp like a kitchen pot, and hair is blow-dried expertly and carefully.

Rheymonn trimmed my ends and gave me some fun loose curls to finish the look. I felt like a movie star! It was just too bad I didn't have a party to go to.

Here's the before and after:

The real result for a color job is a week or two after you leave the salon. My hair looks healthier than before and isn't brittle or dry at all, considering the color and highlights it went through. My base color is the same, with the highlights now slightly more pronounced. It's just what I wanted! My hair feels healthy and looks so much more sane now, thanks to Piandré. Review and swatches: Benefit They're Real Double the Lip

9:57 PM Joanna C. 0 Comments

One of Benefit Cosmetics' newest and most innovative releases comes in a type of lip product that I haven't owned or seen before: A lipstick and lip liner in one tube. Interesting. Very interesting.

Benefit's They're Real Double the Lip Lipstick and Lipliner in One comes in eight shades: Pink Thrills, Lusty Rose, Revved-up Red, Flame Game, Fucshia Fever, Juicy Berry, Nude Scandal, and Criminally Coral.

Since this is part of the They're Real family, the slim tube is in the shiny pewter color that its older sisters, They're Real eyeliner and mascara, came in.

These lipsticks are really unique, even just looking at the teardrop-shaped bullet. The "double" here doesn't mean a separate pencil and lipstick come in one box or tube. The bullet itself has the darker color on the tip of the teardrop-shaped bullet that acts as the lip liner, and the lighter color on the lower curve that acts as the lipstick. Who doesn't want fuller-looking lips in one product?
Pink Thrills, Lusty Rose, Revved-Up Red, Flame Game
Fuchsia Fever, Juicy Berry, Nude Scandal, Criminally Coral
Fuchsia Fever, Juicy Berry, Nude Scandal, Criminally Coral

Pink Thrills, Lusty Rose, Revved-Up Red, Flame Game

Whoever does product development at Benefit did some good thinking behind the unique shape of these bullets, as the point containing the darker color is not too small like the size a lip pencil would be that you would see no difference upon application.

The first use feels unusual as you don't normally turn lipstick upside down when applying, but the shape hugs the line of the lip so well to finish the job in a couple of quick strokes.

Some colors are more obviously two-toned than others. See what I mean in the swatches:
Pink Thrills, Lusty Rose, Revved-Up Red, Flame Game,
Juicy Berry, Nude Scandal, Criminally Coral

Overexposed, but this shot may help if you have super-fair skin!

I know I only have seven swatches of the eight - sorry! Fuchsia Fever was feeling camera shy during class photo day and did not emerge from one of my handbags until days later. I'll try to do this again when time and sunlight are simultaneously cooperative!

I'm wondering if there's an Asian lady behind the team that thought up these lipsticks. Even though Benefit was born in California, these colors are all very wearable on Caucasian or Asian skin tones alike. (I must admit that I found Flame Game the most difficult to wear, but that's generally the case for me with orange lipsticks.) My personal favorite is Revved Up Red, a pretty, wearable strawberry red.

The lipstick formula feels creamy with a satin finish. All shades make my lips appear soft and full, and are very comfortable to wear the whole day. It's doesn't tug when applying and goes on smoothly and evenly. All shades have good pigmentation - the swatches were done with a single swipe. Lusty Rose and Nude Scandal are the less pigmented of the range, which is just fine for those who prefer subtler lipsticks. These two had the least staying power for me, though. The bolder shades had about four to five hours of wear and all left pretty stains after. Which ones do you like?

These lipsticks are available online or in any Benefit Cosmetics boutique around the Philippines. In Cebu, Benefit is located in SM Seaside City.

Product empties: Neutrogena, Shu Uemura, Origins, etc

I've been gathering a basket of empty products to share with you guys. Considering how many things I'm constantly trying out, I always feel a sense of accomplishment when I get to the last bit of something! Read on for short reviews on some of the hair care, skin care, and makeup I've used up.
I'm more conscious of using up skin care products because since they're all liquids and creams, they will expire quickly. So the only makeup bits I've used up recently are:

NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream in San Paulo. I discovered this product while shopping at a department store in Davao, then maybe a year later, it started exploding all over the beauty community. Many of us absolutely love the Soft Matte Lip Creams, myself included - I think I have 10 other colors waiting to be used up. I haven't met one shade that I haven't liked.

NYX Cosmetics Stay Matte But Not Flat powder foundation in 02 Nude. A good lightweight powder that I favored for setting concealer / corrector on eyes. I probably will not repurchase, though, because I really just used this on my eye area, and I have other powders that can do the same job.

MAC brow gels in Girl Boy and Beguile. I remember everyone going crazy over Girl Boy, but I actually prefer Beguile. I think MAC brow gels are in better packaging now; the wands on these definitely needed to be smaller, as they picked up and packed on too much product. I may repurchase if these have smaller wands now, but then, there are so many cheaper alternatives that basically do the same thing.

Benefit Cosmetics They're Real mascara. This is one of those mascaras that are better when they've dried up a little after a few weeks. The spiky ball on the end of the wand does help with grabbing and coating smaller lashes. I'm not one to splurge on mascaras because they're the type of things you cannot keep for too long, so I wouldn't classify this as one of my must-haves.

Deja Vu Lash Up mascara. A gift from my half-Japanese friend who got it from her other home country. This gives really pretty long, separated lashes without clumps. The only down side is the brush is huge, so it could be a problem for those with short eyelashes.

For hair, face, and body care:

Pantene Pro-V 3-minute Miracle Total Damage Care 10 conditioner. A thicker conditioner that may help those with dry or damaged hair. This is more expensive than a lot of drugstore conditioners, though. It's not a bad product at all, but there are cheaper ones that have a similar effect.

Neutrogena Pore Refining daily cleanser. It took several weeks, but about halfway through the bottle, I started to notice that my pores seemed to be less obvious on the areas beside my nose. It's hard to find a product that can noticeably reduce pores, so I would recommend trying this if that's a skin concern you want to address. I used this only in the morning. At night, I would use...

Nature Republic Jeju Sparkling Mud foam cleanser. It says it "contains Jeju mountain Sanbang springs carbonic water and French mud." After removing makeup, this gave my skin a good cleanse. The 150ml tube will last you a long time. Don't forget to cut it open when no more product can be squeezed out; you'll be amazed how much more product is stuck on the sides of the tube.

Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Resist 24 night emulsion. I brought this on trips until I used it up. You're supposed to follow emulsion with moisturizer, but I felt like I didn't need that additional step with this. I usually just bring the essentials when I travel because I hate lugging heavy bags, so this did well as my night-time moisturizer.

Shu Uemura Skin Purifier cleansing beauty oil. I only buy this in travel sizes because I just can't bear to spend that much on a big bottle. Also brought this on trips until I finally used it up. If I was only going away briefly, this served as both makeup remover and cleanser. You really can take off a full face of makeup with maybe eight drops of this, more if you're wearing full eye makeup. There is basis to this being a cult product for many years!

The Body Shop Moringa body butter. I've been using The Body Shop's body butter since I was 15. Nuff said.

The Body Shop Shea Butter shower cream. This is very moisturizing, but it wouldn't lather! I prefer the shower gels from The Body Shop. I just feel cleaner somehow when I see bubbles when I shower!

Bath and Body Works Shea and Vitamin E lotion in Passionfruit Kiss. Another product I've been using since high school in various scents. Again, nuff said.

Belo Essentials Whitening Anti-perspirant Deodorant in Shower Fresh. A good enough daily deodorant and anti-perspirant, but I prefer Dove for keeping underarms soft and bright.

Origins GinZing refreshing eye cream. My new holy grail eye cream. I've had dark circles since I was in college, no matter how well rested or hydrated I am. This does not feel sticky and will not clump under eye makeup. I noticed after maybe two months of use (this l5ml jar lasted me several months!) my under eye circles were not as dark. I've heard of eye creams that help minimize dark circles, but usually at twice the price or more. My cousin bought this for me in Hong Kong as a gift (thanks, Kuya!) and I've just received a new jar to love (thanks, Origins Philippines!). We don't have Origins just yet in Cebu, but definitely get this if you're in Manila (currently retails for P1,400) or if you spot an Origins counter overseas. Highly recommend!

If you made it this far, thanks so much for reading through! Do let me know if you have thoughts on these products as well or if you have others to recommend.

How to clean makeup brushes

2:03 PM Joanna C. 0 Comments

A necessary evil. That's what I think when I have to wash my makeup brushes. It's a chore that I tend to put off as much as possible, but it comes to a point that you keep buying new brushes to avoid washing the old ones...and then you end up with 50 dirty brushes, and quite literally two hours of your time down the drain.
Wouldn't it be nice if makeup brushes could stay magically clean all the time?

Some people may find it relaxing, but I find washing brushes to be such a chore because it eats up so much time! However, it is a necessary evil because it is an absolute must to keep brushes clean. You don't want gunky old makeup stuck to the bristles. Your skin will not like this. Makeup colors will no longer translate well when applied. And I find keeping both brushes and makeup clean and sanitized extends their life spans by leaps and bounds.

If you tend to procrastinate with this chore like me, the first piece of advice I would share is to wash 5 or 10 at a time instead of tackling an entire pile all at once. If you have a job and family and friends and hobbies and a life in general, two hours washing brushes is a lot to ask. But if you work with makeup on a daily basis, as a makeup artist or as someone like me who wears it probably 360 days a year, you have to make time for it. I've found myself much more willing to do the job if I only wash a few at a time, even if it's over several sessions. (Having Spotify on helps!) If you prefer to deal with it all at once, I salute you!

Do not wash your brushes too frequently. Always exposing them to water and soap may cause the bristles to fall out. To keep your brushes clean at all times, spot clean with a spray cleanser. You can DIY, but I find it too much of a hassle so I just buy ready-made ones. Spray on the bristles, wipe off on a face towel and see the gunk come off. Some people opt for paper towels, but clean old towels are way more environmentally friendly.
Spot clean between washes with spray cleansers.
Got these from Beauty Manila, Bonmarchepage, and H&M in Barcelona.

I know all bloggers and YouTubers have their makeup standing in cups on their dressers, but I live in a dusty city (sigh). My makeup brushes live in a drawer to keep them protected from dirt.

I deep clean my brushes by washing them with shampoo once a month, but you can do it twice a month if you're an even bigger clean freak than I am.

To avoid wasting running water, dip dirty brushes bristles-down in a cup of water when you're getting ready to wash. Just like the hair on your head, shampoo works much better when hair is totally soaked instead of just wet. Make sure the water level isn't far up past the ferrules (metal part of the brush) or you'll loosen the glue holding the brush hairs together.

Brush shampoos from Beauty Manila, Althea Korea, and the classic Johnson's baby shampoo.

I wash my brushes using Johnson's baby shampoo or any of these brush shampoos I've picked up here and there. Just a drop is enough for a small or not-so-dirty brush, but you'll definitely need more for foundation brushes. Those are the toughest to wash, by far! Massage gently on your hand or use a brush egg to rinse out dirt and pigments. I've even used this silicone potholder from Daiso as a cleaning surface, just to prevent my hands from getting raw. But your fingers are still the best bet for working through bristles to get brushes really clean. Be gentle and don't pull on the hairs, and always wash brushes bristles-down to prevent water from seeping into the ferrules.

If you find that a brush is still not clean enough, simply wash again with Ivory bar soap. I've been double washing for years and Ivory bar soap will not hurt your brushes or make them stiff. Don't forget to wash the handles, too.

After washing, rinse really well, then (gently!) squeeze out excess water from the bristles. Lay flat to dry overnight on a towel (or one of those brush trees if you're fancy). Then be proud of yourself and get on with the rest of your life!

Swatches: Clinique Pop Liquid Matte Lip Colour

I've got swatches of six shades of the Clinique Pop Liquid Matte Lip Colour + Primer here! Couldn't resist swatching these on a visit to the Clinique store at SM Seaside City.
 Swatches on NC25-30 skin:
Flame Pop, Black Licorice Pop, Sweetheart Pop,
Candied Apple Pop, Petal Pop, Cake Pop
Each shade is true to color from what you see from the rectangular frosted tube. Each swatch was just one smooth and easy swipe. Check out how pigmented each one is, and how evenly the color glides on.
The wands are itty bitty since these come in your regular lipstick size instead of the longer tubes that liquid lipsticks normally come in. The tiny wand means lots more control, and the applicator picks up enough product to coat the lips with one go.

I can't review this product just yet; I held myself back because I still have many liquid lipsticks to use up! (Yes, I exercise self control sometimes with makeup shopping.) I try not to hoard liquid products because those spoil so easily. But believe me, I was super tempted - Sweetheart Pop and Candied Apple Pop look right up my alley! I wasn't surprised to hear that Cake Pop is a bestseller, since it's a safe "everyday" color.

Here's how the Clinique website describes these:
"Lightweight liquid lipstick covers lips with lush pigment and a modern matte finish. Wears all day. Moisturizing formula with built-in primer provides a smooth, even glide so lips feel as fresh as they look."

In Cebu, Clinique has a counter at Rustan's Department Store in Ayala Center, and its own boutique at SM Seaside City. Are you heading over to pick up one of these gorgeous lipsticks?

Clinique at SM Seaside City Cebu

Clinique is one of the brands that I have been using ever since I started getting into makeup and skin care. I first encountered the Dramatically Different moisturizing lotion in high school, and I have been using it on and off ever since. Clinique's just so reliable like that, and I think that's why many have patronized the brand for decades. I don't think its branding is meant for Clinique to have the trendiest makeup, but you'll notice in the past few years that they have really been stepping up their game with more on-trend products (liquid lipsticks, highlighters, etc.) while having their bestsellers permanently available.

The recently opened store at SM Seaside City is consistently Clinique. By this, I mean the store looks just like how its ads are; very clean and simple, mostly white with pops of color, and putting all visual focus on the products themselves (no model, no backgrounds, no fancy typefaces). Take a little tour around the store through the photos below:
Can't miss the bright white boutique. The seating area is awesome for those who want to get off their feet, or to park the bored husband while you test swatch everything.

A fun display of one of Clinique's bestsellers in the Philippines and worldwide: the Chubby Stick in heaps of colors!

White lighting all around the products make it really easy to see everything.

Men's skin care in man-friendly gray packaging.

Pep-Start, Clinique's newest line of multi-taskers designed for millennials who are always on the go. (Here's one who maintains a blog, writes two newspaper columns, and works a full-time office job...yours truly!)

Pep-Start eye cream, exfoliating cleanser, and moisturizer.

Wonderfully neat rows of makeup! (i.e. what my makeup table will never look like)

So easy to differentiate each product and each color. The only confusion is which ones to buy without spending all your money! I was so tempted to get the highlighter stick and the bottom-lash mascara. Soon, perhaps :)

A glass table in the middle holds more makeup testers. These are the ultra pigmented Clinique Pop lipsticks.

A wall of bestsellers beside a vanity area with great lighting.

Monthly favorites: Forever 21 cotton pads, Morphe 35T palette

January zipped by super fast! In month-end/start-of-the-month fashion, I thought I'd share with you some old and new favorites in the past few weeks.

Forever 21 cotton pads
I picked these up on a whim from one of the bins of knickknacks that Forever 21 traps you with while you're queuing to pay. I swear I'm not obsessed with these just because they have the cutest little bunnies embossed on them. With my usual night toner and serum, these pads do an awesome job at lifting off the last makeup and dirt from my face. They somehow do it better than the cotton balls or other cotton pads I've used, without using more toner or serum. I only wish they were cheaper. These are P160 for a box of 110 pads. That's still not really expensive since 110 pieces will last for about three months with daily use, but that's more than I usually spend for cotton pads.

NYX Cosmetics blush in Taupe
My skin is too light at the moment to use my orangey bronzers, so I've been reaching for my trusty old Taupe powder blush by NYX for my cheek contour. If you have fair to medium skin with neutral to cool undertones, this is a good affordable powder to contour with. It's not heavily pigmented, so most people won't be able to tell you've been sculpting your features with this!

K Palette Real Lasting Eyebrow pen
I previously reviewed and have since used up the K Palette two-way eyebrow pen, but I think I like this one better without the powdery eyebrow base. If you hate the dark, ultra sculpted brows that were all the rage last year thanks to a certain Jenner, you'll love this super natural-looking pen eyebrow pen that lasts all day and through Zumba class. Natural brows are much more 2017, by the way!

Morphe 35T eyeshadow palette
This is a recent acquisition, but I loved it from first use. Many people talk about the 35O palette, which is all warm neutrals, but the purple, bronze and taupe (the "T" in 35T) colors in this palette are more appealing to me. This is my first encounter with Morphe eyeshadows and I'm definitely already a fan. Some are more pigmented than others, but they apply evenly and blend so incredibly smoothly together. On me, these shadows last all day. You don't always get that softness and longevity from less expensive palettes. The 35 pans in the palette are as big as single MAC shadow pans, but you get this entire palette for the price of two MAC singles.

Review and swatch: Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour Stick Blush No. 21

I bought this blush completely on a whim when I was invited for a luxurious makeover session at the Chanel beauty counter in Rustan's. With a luxurious brand comes a matching price tag, so I was worried I would regret this purchase after I took it home with me. A product can be really different with personal use compared to when a makeup artist is applying all sorts of things using professional techniques on you.
Thank goodness I've had no buyer's remorse with the Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour Stick Blush in No. 21 (now, if only it had a shorter name!). I did give it several months of use before reviewing to see if I truly love it, and I do. It's so pretty and easy that any makeup lover will have no trouble using it, no professional techniques required.
No. 21 is a beautiful coral-pink that leans a bit on the warm side. It's the type of color that is gorgeous by itself or with a full face of makeup. I've tried it with different makeup looks and it fares well with more natural looks, or a heavier eye and lip. The color is not too pink and not too orange, so it works well with either warm or cool tones on the face.

Although it's called sheer, it's something you can layer on for a more intense flush. There's a teeny bit of shimmer when you look at it from the tube, but I can't see the shimmer on the skin. The swatch below is a single swipe and honestly doesn't justify how pretty this is on on the face, but in case you haven't noticed, this beauty blogger is a little camera-shy on her own blog!
One to two swipes per cheek, some blending with my fingers, and this blush is done. It settles on the skin so well that it doesn't look like flat matte pigment is sitting on your face. It's not at all sticky like some cream blushes can be. On me, the color stays on for eight hours before it begins to fade. I think even if I used this daily, this tube is going to last a long time. It is lightly scented, but nothing that you can still smell after application.
Don't hate me for writing a review about a limited edition product! I won't say that it is a must-have because some people will find it too expensive, but because I love it so much, I don't regret buying this. If you are a fan of luxury cosmetics and Chanel releases this again, you will also love it if you're in search of a versatile cream blush that's fool-proof to use.

Affordable lipsticks for the office

If, like me, you work in a corporate setting, our tubes of bright or vampy lip colors have to wait until the weekend to come out and be the center of attention. At the office, you’d rather let your work be the most outstanding thing about you rather than your attention-grabbing lipstick. You also need something that wears well and is easy to swipe on when you suddenly have a client meeting. Here are some of my favorites to reach for from Monday to Friday. These are all locally available, all come in different shades to suit Pinay skin, and none of these is over P400!

Ever Bilena Advance Supreme lipstick
This glides on effortlessly and feels very lightweight on the lips, for those who hate heavy lipstick. It only lasts about two or three hours on me, but with a price tag of less than P200, you won’t feel like every touch-up is costing you a pretty peso. For work, I wear the shade Audrey, which is a cherry red that is not too intense or too pigmented, keeping it noticeable but not in-your-face for a professional setting.

Ever Bilena Matte lipstick
This is a crowd favorite, with good reason. It’s a creamy matte that lasts several hours without drying the lips and is again less than P200. I have these in a few shades, but Siennas is my favorite to wear to the office. It will be a beautiful “my lips but better” nude if you have medium to dark skin. On lighter skin, it’s a good way to ease into the 90s lip trend if you are not sure that it will look good on you, or don’t want to go outright brown.

Maybelline ColorSensational Creamy Matte lipstick
There are so many varieties of ColorSensational lipstick now, and each with at least half a dozen shades. Touch of Spice is probably the most popular of the Matte line. It used to get sold out all the time, but I think Maybelline Philippines heard the clamor and have kept their shelves well-stocked. I also like wearing Ravishing Rose if I want to go pink.

Flormar Super Matte lipstick
I have three shades of this (full review and swatches here), but 210 is one of my most-worn to the office. Considering how many tubes I’ve tried out, this one is really a favorite for its comfortable wear and sophisticated color. Sorry if the tip on this one looks pretty ratchet; something fell on it while I was taking this photo :(
